When I first became employed as a Power Engineering it was challenging.  It took lots of work to get good at what we do.  As I worked hard I could see others doing almost nothing.  I would often have to do the work that they failed to do.  I couldn't figure out how these guys could keep a job. 

For some guys it was a real craft.  They knew what to do and what not to do.  This way they ensured they'd keep their job while minimizing any kind of real effort they would have to make. That's not the way I role and don't encourage anyone to be like that.  Good people do their part in life.  Take a breather once and a while but be a positive role model.

Two other techniques they employed were to know how to be their but be invisible or be a politician.  They'd find places where they could hide by keeping on the move.  They'd spend time in the mechanical shop or, the I/E shop or, the contractors shop or, the lab, talking to people so they could do their slacking off and so it would be difficult to track them down.

The second way was to just be a politician so they could avoid answering questions and or develop the art of baffle gab to confuse their challengers.  It's a non-aggressive kind of avoidance tactic.  And it is disappointing to know that these tactics work extremely well on many supervisors.  It's when your own supervisor can't see through the BS that you best leave it alone and hope for a better day.

Some guys were smart and would work full term and then retire and other guys weren't so smart.  They were just plain lazy and dumb.  Those guys would get fired.
